Chancay Port: New Route Between China and South America

2024-12-14 09:57

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte announced the opening of Chancay Port in Peru via virtual meeting on November 14 at the Peruvian Government Palace.

Chancay Port is located in Chancay District, Valar, Peru, about 80 kilometers away from the capital Lima. It is a high-capacity port built by China COSCO Shipping Lines. The maximum water depth of the port is 17.8 meters. It can dock 18,000 TEU ultra-large container ships and can reach a throughput capacity of 1 million TEU per year, up to 1.5 million TEU in the long term. Currently, most of the cargo from Asia and Oceania to Peru must transit through Central America or North America, and the throughput cannot meet the needs of foreign trade modernization.

The port can not only dock large ships, but also shorten the shipping journey from China to Latin America from 35 days to about 25 days, significantly reducing logistics costs. Peru has a giant port that can directly reach Asia, which can provide a strong boost to the economic development of Peru and even Latin America. Peru has launched a plan to build a railway and road network to connect major cities in the country with the Port of Chancay, and it is expected that in the future it will connect with the road networks of other countries in the region. When neighboring countries want to send their goods, mineral materials, meats and fruits to Asia, they can consider Chancay as a port of departure.

The opening of the Chancay port marked the beginning of a new chapter in maritime trade between China and Peru.
