After three years, China announced its reopening as of January 8, 2023. Passengers can enter China without quarantine.... All you need is a negative PCR result within 48 hours before departure. You do not need to apply for a health code.
For travelers holding a tourist visa or a 10-year visa, the additional opening may have to wait until the second quarter of this year.
China's current entry requirements and policy
Although China has announced quarantine-free policies for travel after January 8, 2023, the Tourist Visa is still suspended. Entering China for tourism is still not feasible. There are now four ways for foreigners to enter China:
Have Chinese residence permits valid for work, personal affairs and meeting.
Hold a diplomatic, service, courtesy or C visa.
Have APEC business cards valid for vacations
Apply for a new China visa (the previous visa will not be cancelled): Z, M, R, X1, Q and S visas are now possible.
In addition, China has now reinstated its visa-free policy. If you meet the conditions, you can travel to China without applying for a new visa.
The 144-hour visa-free policy requirements:
Passport holders from 53 countries, including USA, Canada, UK, Australia, France, Germany, Singapore, etc.
Must be in transit to a third country or region (Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are included). For example, US-Beijing-Hong Kong is an acceptable itinerary for a 144-hour transit policy, but US-Beijing-US is not.
You need a visa for the third country/region (if required).
You must stay within the permitted region and not travel outside it at all. For example, you can stay in the Shanghai region such as Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou, but you cannot make a trip from Shanghai to Beijing.
What to do when you obtain the entry permit
Make sure you have permission to enter China (valid permit, visa or ID card).
Book a flight to China (direct flights or transfers to China are allowed).
Perform a PCR test within 48 hours prior to departure and only board the flight when your nucleic acid result is negative.
Board the plane, prepare your ID card or passport with permission/visa.
International flights to China
China adjusted restrictions on international flights to China. Passengers can take direct flights or transfer to China. Multiple transit flights are allowed. There are no requirements for the transfer route. Passengers can make their own decisions according to their own situation and the flight situation.

For transfer passengers, you will only need to perform a PRC test at your departure city or at the airport/city of transfer.
For example, if you are departing New York and will be transferring through Bangkok to China, you may choose to take a PCR test in New York within 48 hours prior to departure or you may choose to take the PCR test when you arrive in Bangkok.
Note: If you choose to perform the PCR test at the transfer airport, contact the airport in advance to confirm if PCR testing facilities are available.
What is COVID's current situation in China?
Domestic anti-epidemic measures are also being adjusted and optimized. No health codes or negative nucleic acid test results are required for domestic travel. No more landing tests.
